Safety Tips

Your safety is our priority. Follow these guidelines to chat safely on Nightvent.

Remember: You're Chatting with Strangers

While Nightvent is designed to be a safe space, you are still chatting with random people on the internet. Always exercise caution, trust your instincts, and protect your personal information.

The Golden Rule

Never share personal information that could identify you or compromise your safety.
If you wouldn't share it with a stranger on the street, don't share it here.

What NOT to Share

NEVER share the following information:

  • Full name (first + last)
  • Phone number
  • Home/work address
  • Email address
  • Social media handles (Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc.)
  • Photos of yourself
  • Specific location (city, neighborhood, landmarks)
  • School/university name
  • Workplace name
  • Financial information (bank accounts, credit cards)
  • Links to personal websites/blogs
  • Gaming usernames that can be traced

Even seemingly harmless details (like your favorite coffee shop or gym) can be used to identify you when combined with other information.

Red Flags to Watch For

End the conversation immediately and report the user if they:

🚩 Ask for personal information

Pressuring you to share your name, location, social media, or photos

🚩 Send sexual or inappropriate content

NSFW messages, sexual solicitation, or explicit requests

🚩 Become aggressive or threatening

Insults, threats, harassment, or bullying behavior

🚩 Use hate speech or discriminatory language

Racism, sexism, homophobia, or other forms of discrimination

🚩 Try to move the conversation off-platform

Insisting on moving to WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, or other messaging apps

🚩 Ask for money or financial help

Sob stories, investment opportunities, or requests for financial assistance

🚩 Share links or ask you to click suspicious URLs

Phishing attempts, malware links, or external websites

🚩 Claim to be in crisis to manipulate you

Emotional manipulation, guilt-tripping, or threatening self-harm to get attention

What to Do If You Feel Uncomfortable

1. Trust Your Instincts

If something feels wrong, it probably is. You don't owe anyone an explanation. Your comfort and safety come first.

2. End the Chat Immediately

Click the "End Chat" or "Skip" button. You are never obligated to continue a conversation that makes you uncomfortable.

3. Report the User

Use the "Report" button and select a reason:

  • Harassment or bullying
  • Inappropriate/sexual content
  • Hate speech
  • Spam or advertising
  • Threats or violence
  • Other violations

Reports are reviewed by our moderation team, and violators may be banned.

4. Take a Break

If you've had a negative experience, it's okay to log off and take a break. Come back when you feel ready.

5. Seek Support if Needed

If something you experienced online is affecting you emotionally, talk to someone you trust or reach out to a mental health professional.

Best Practices for Safe Chatting

✓ Keep it anonymous

Use vague terms when sharing experiences. Say "my city" instead of naming it.

✓ Be respectful

Treat others the way you want to be treated. Kindness goes a long way.

✓ Set boundaries

It's okay to say "I'd rather not talk about that" if a topic makes you uncomfortable.

✓ Don't click unknown links

Links can lead to phishing sites or malware. Never click links from strangers.

✓ Remember: No chat history

Messages aren't stored. If someone claims to have "proof" of your conversation, they're lying.

✓ Use Nightvent for venting, not therapy

This is peer support, not professional help. For serious issues, see a therapist.

✓ Take breaks

Don't feel pressured to match continuously. Chat when you want to, not because you feel obligated.

✓ Report violations

Help keep the community safe by reporting bad actors. Your reports matter.

For Parents & Guardians

Nightvent is for adults (18+) only.

If you discover that a minor is using this platform, please contact us immediately at support@nightvent.app. We will terminate the account and investigate.

We recommend that parents educate their children about online safety, monitor their internet usage, and use parental control software to restrict access to age-inappropriate platforms.

Remember

🔒 Nightvent is designed to protect your privacy, but you are ultimately responsible for what you share.

🛡️ No one from Nightvent will ever ask you for your password or personal information.

💙 The majority of users are here for genuine conversation. Don't let a few bad actors ruin your experience—just report and move on.
